Matching Metaphors

WALT: Match metaphors with their meaning in sport and nonsport activities.

Previously, I have been learning about metaphors. To help me to have an even better understanding of them, I played a game and I had to match sport and nonsport meanings with the correct metaphor. Because I had already played this game with the writing target group, I had to teach the other students how to play it. I found this game very useful and fun because I got to use them in my narrative. My favourite metaphor is "A big hit". This game helped me alot, especially in writing.

Measuring Angles

In this game, I had to measure 10 angles accurately to get my answer right. I found this game really easy because I knew how to use a protractor and because I could identify what kind of angles they were giving me. The only thing that I didn't like about this game was that your overall score wouldn't show at the end. Next time, I'd like to revisit prime numbers and prime factors.

Car patterns

This game was called car patterns. In this game, I was given 8 chances to try a figure out what the correct pattern was. To help me, I used the shaded boxes on the side which told me what car that I chose was in the right place. I found this game a little bit confusing at first, but once I played it twice, I got the hang of it and ended up guessing the correct pattern on my 7th try. Next time, I'd like to play a calculating time game.

Decorating muffins with patterns

WALT: Study patterns in algebra

Yesterday, my class and I had a decorating muffins competition, but the thing was that it had to be a repetitive pattern. We had to use at least 2 fruits and something else and I used kiwifruit, mandarins, raisins, sunflower seeds and fruit loops. Our decoration had to be a repetitive pattern because for the last 3 weeks we were learning about patterns and rules, and we had to apply our knowledge from that onto a banana muffin. I found this easy and challenging  for me because I already had a pattern in mind and because we only got 10 minutes to decorate. I also found this really interesting and fun because I have never decorated a muffin with fruit before and because we got to decorate our muffin how ever we wanted it to be. The winner of our competition was Ketura. Next time, I’d like to learn how to make calculations with time.

Netball with Anne

Today was our last day playing netball with our coach Anne. We finally got to play a real game of netball and we all really enjoyed it. I was in the purple team and we won our second game because we had a really good goal shooter and we all worked as a team very well. Netball for me was really fun but exhausting at the same time because I always kept my eyes on the ball and ran to wherever it was.

The Inspiring Walkers

WALT: Discuss goal settings with Dreydon and kate

On Tuesday, Dreydon and Kate came back to our school to talk to the senior classes more about their 80km walk. Last time they came, they presented us with a $4,600 cheque for St Pius school, Adult literacy and our school. When they came to our class on Tuesday, Dreydon talked to us about the walk that he and his workmates experienced and about all the gear they needed, how to keep warm, their goal and much more.

The first thing that Dreydon talked to us about was his experience that he had walking. He told us that it was very hard because he knew that he had a long way to go and that the weather was harsh. In his presentation, he showed us pictures of the keen walkers starting the walk and some beautiful pictures of the view that they got to see as the walked along the pathways.

Next, Dreydon talked to us about how they had to prepare themselves for the walk ahead of them. He told us that his boss told them about the walk they were doing and that they were all like “ Well, what will we need??” That made some of us laugh because of his facial expressions. Then he said that to prepare themselves, they had to plan a goal to so Kate the author helped them to do that. Their goal was Specific.Measurable.Achievable.Relevant.Time bound. So it was smart. To prepare themselves, Dreydon also said that while they planned, they had to think about what gear they would need.

To show our appreciation to Dreydon and everyone else who walked and raised us money, we also did a walk just around GI. After Dreydon presented his slideshow and his goals, it has inspired me to want to achieve more and to work harder on my goals. A couple of days later, our class received a bag filled with pineapple lumps and a lovely card.

Patterns and rules

This is the pattern and rule that I made. My first pattern didn't turn out well so I started again and it looks better now. I found this a bit challenging because I needed some help with finding my rule. Next time, I'd like to make another pattern and rule without a friend helping me so that I could maybe teach somebody else on making their own pattern and rule.
