The Legend of St. patrick

WALT: Explain the legend of St. patrick

It all started in a place called “Britain” well, wales. A man named Maewyn succat was born in 387. His parents belonged in a high Roman family. He didn't like the attitude of the British towards Irish.

People call him St. Patrick because Pope Celestine gave him that name. Maewyn wrote letters to coroticus to criticize a raid on ireland conducted by coroticus, a british chieftain.Several patrick converts were killed during the raid.

At the age of 16, he was captured by Irish raiders sold to a chief in Ireland. He was sold into slavery and spent his teen years as a shepard alone for 6 years. That was the time when he became religious. He had dreams to find a ship that would lead him to freedom, then he escaped. He returned home to his family and considered himself as a Irish who found god. Patrick still had haunted memories of Ireland. He stayed in Britain for 18 years and then went on a mission where he suffered many trials as a missionary. He wanted to preach the gospel to people around the world. He spent 28 years traveling across the world to spread the word of god.

Legends say that the reason Ireland does not have snakes is because on a hill, patrick drove the snake into a wooden box where they could not break free. Another Legend is where he tricked the snake into a small box then casted it in the sea vanishing the snake forever!

The Shamrock comes from the gaelic word “Seamrog”. In irish it means “ summer plant”
meaning “trefoil” three leaved or little clover. The colour of the shamrock is green. They say that if you don’t wear green on this special day, you will get pinched!

On the 17 march, 461 AD Saint. Patrick died at the age of 76. He was buried downpatrick.

St. patricks day was announced in 1903 where it became an official holiday. The parade for st. patricks day was held in boston 1737, but today the Largest parade is held in New York City.
