Corn Art

This is my corn art that I finished last week. I found it difficult at first because I couldn't get the                    kernels right, but then mr. Ramklowan helped us all and I found it easy to do. I liked doing this art.

fractions, percentages and decimals

WALT: Revise fractions, decimals and percentages.

This morning, I played this game called fractions, decimals and percentages. This was a card game and we had to find the card that matched ours to make a set of 4. I had 53% and I had to find the other 3 cards that matched mine. This game was easy for me because I understood fractions, decimals and percentages but it was also really confusing because I couldn't find my card because others had it. Next time I want to revise ratio and proportion.

Last day of Snag golf

Walt: play long shots in snag golf.

On Thursday, we played snag golf our normal Thursday game. This Thursday was our last day of snag golf so Hugh our coach told us that we had to try and play big shots and try to make them long. Of course we were all excited because this time we could acherly play on the grass so Hugh went through what we had to do to hit the ball and his exact words were always keep your eyes on the ball not on the club If you're a right hander then your right hand is always at the bottom of the golf  club or if you're a left hander then you do the same thing, but your left hand is at the bottom, never take your feet of the ground when you're swinging the ball only twist your shoulders. When he was explaining that, we were all waiting patiently with eager to get our hands on the golf clubs and find a good spot so as soon as he told us to get a spot, we ran like the wind to get a good spot. When we got a spot, we had to get ready and stand in position. We had to put our left foot on the ground in front of our right foot, pay close attention to where our ball would fly then we had to twist our arms and hit the ball as hard as we could.

Corn Survey

For the past weeks, we studied corn maths.  When we were doing this maths, we had to make a survey on “How do you like your corn” Then we had to write down how many people liked their corn cooked that way. This is the survey we made in class:

Then, with all this information, we had to use an online site called “Create a Graph”. It was really fast and easy and I enjoyed creating my pie and line graph but I really needed to concentrate just to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. Next time, I’d like to learn how to make an area graph.

Corn Maths

On Monday, we were learning to estimate parts of a cob of sweetcorn. I worked with Trinity. In my group, we had to estimate how much silk, husk and kernels there were on our cob of corn. My group had the closest estimation for the kernels as we got 820 and on a cob of corn, there are about 800 kernels. I found this activity really easy to do because I knew how to count and estimate. To do this, I had to know how to round off and I did. Next time, I'd like to do an activity like this but maybe involving decimals, percentages and fractions.

The growing of corn in New Zealand

WALT: Write an information report.

Path of Maize to New Zealand:

The growing of corn in New Zealand

In the early year of 1769, way before most of us were born, Yen wrote that it is believed New Zealand was first discovered corn when Captain James Cook arrived in New Zealand. When Captain Cook brought corn to New Zealand the Maoris were already growing food crops like kumara, cabbage and potatoes. Then they started to grow corn.

In New Zealand,Corn is grown from September to February and requires tropical climate to grow fresh because corn will not grow in frosty weather. The climate for growing corn is definitely suitable because here in summer, it does get hot and corn needs warm soil to grow in and the temperature must be at least 16c and 35c. Although summer in New Zealand can be different in some parts of the country, corn will still grow just as long as the soil is warm but it might not come out bright yellow. It could come out white!

Back then, to share the corn, the maori’s would boil it and roast it and then they would exchange it for other food crops like kumara, potatoes, cabbage and other foods that were harvested.

Today, Corn is used for a lot of things. Not only is it used for foods like baked goods, starch, corn flour, popcorn and cereals like cornflakes, It’s also used to feed animals.

I should've Listened

I Should've Listened

It was a cold, frosty morning at the break of dawn, fog was filling up the air and birds had already been up chirping when Drake stepped into his brand new silver boat with his cheeks flushed. Drake was out fishing his favourite thing to do on days like this. Drake loved nature. He was a middle aged man who liked to box. He had light brown hair with curls at the end and a prickly beard that felt like sharp porcupine skin. He had light green eyes that sparkled like diamonds in the sun when he caught a big one and he was quite tall and muscled too.

“ Ahh, on goes the bait” he said to himself. So carefully, he put on his jelly like worms on to his line and “ PLONK” he put his line in the water. Then, his boat started to shake. Splashes of water splatted on to his face. “ Ewww! Sea Salt” he said. “ splash, splash” went the water. “ Aye?” Drake questioned to himself.

A couple of minutes later, Drake saw a long green thing. His palms started to get all sweaty and his muscles started to tighten up abit. So, carefully he looked out on the side of his boat to see what was down there then… “AHHHH!” Shouted Drake. As a vicious, green crocodile jumped out of the water and tried to snap his head off.  Drake was super scared. He wasn't prepared for this sort of thing. He tried to yell and scream for help “ Help! Heeeelp!” But no one could hear his soft croaky voice as he was in the middle of the Louisiana River surrounded by tall, trees piled with green leaves.

Drake then turned a bit pale and started feeling like 1000 butterflies were fluttering around in his tummy. The boat started to rock. Left and right, Left and right. The crocodile was behind all of this. It wanted a feed! It wanted DRAKE! It wanted to munch on his flesh but Drake was too hard to get. “ Oh no!” Yelled Drake as the crocodile kept rocking the boat. Then Drake looked at the motor and as soon as he tried to turn it on, the crocodile's jaws bit into it and sunk it’s sharp razor teeth in it. Drake was devastated and relieved at the same time because he thought that the crocodile would take ages to get his teeth out of the motor but he still felt like he needed to get of the boat.

So he leaped like a frog out of his boat and tried to swim to a safe place, but because he couldn’t swim as a kid when he was told to  and didn’t bother to take lessons from a professional when his parents asked him to, he started to drown and the crocodile saw something splash up and down and quickly pulled his teeth out of the motor and swam to Drake.

The following day, a tourist saw bones floating in the river and beside it was a fat crocodile sleeping as she quickly  boated away before she became like Drake.

Theme: Don’t be like Drake. Listen to those who tell you to swim.

Bruce Lee Reading activity

This is the reading activity that I did yesterday. It was all about Bruce Lee so I didn't really find this super easy, but I did learn some things about him like he died while filming a movie and that he has a son.

Factors

This is the game that I played in maths. In this game I had to make sure that I knew my times tables because this was a factor game. I found this game a little bit hard but at the end I got the hang of it. Next time, I’d like to play a game that includes prime numbers because I don’t really know them.
